With LeBron James stepping out of the first NBA players meeting in the NBA bubble on Wednesday calling for the season to end, former US President Barack Obama ended up being the catalyst for a change of scenery.
As Shams Charania first reported, LeBron James, Chris Paul, who is also the president of the National Basketball Players Association, and a committee of players approached Obama for advice.
With the playoffs in the air after the Milwaukee Bucks boycott in protest of the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin, James reportedly felt the Bucks’ move lacked a plan.
According to ESPN, “Obama was in favor of playing again once the players seized the moment to work with league owners to identify and implement actionable elements for positive change.”
Obama’s office issued a statement on the meeting that practically confirmed the former president’s view: “As an avid basketball fan, President Obama regularly speaks with players and league officials. When asked, he was happy to provide advice Wednesday night to a small group of NBA players looking to harness their immense platforms forever after their brave and inspiring attack in the wake of Jacob Blake’s shot. They discussed the establishment of a social justice committee to ensure that the actions of the players and the league this week lead to a meaningful and sustained commitment to criminal justice and police reform. “
