MANILA, Philippines – On the occasion of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday encouraged Filipinos to be kind to each other as the country continues to face challenges.

The Immaculate Conception marks the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary free from original sin by virtue of the merits of her son, Jesus Christ.

“Let us draw strength from the holy life and example of the Virgin Mary so that we can remain steadfast, joyful and hopeful amidst the many challenges we face today as a nation,” Duterte said in a statement.

May her Immaculate Conception guide us all, whatever faith we may have, to be kind to one another during these difficult times as we look to a better future in this life and beyond. I wish you all a solemn and meaningful celebration, ”he added.

It was in 2017 when Duterte declared December 8 of each year as a special non-working holiday in celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception through the promulgation of Republic Law No. 10966.
