Asus offers a ton of color options with this laptop.

Asus just updated its VivoBook lineup with the launch of the VivoBook 14 and VivoBook 15. The new 11th Intel Core processor machines come with model numbers X413 and X513, respectively. Asus’ VivoBook series is known to be affordable yet powerful.

With the COVID-19 situation spinning around, most of you might have been looking for a laptop that could provide value for your investment. Is the Asus VivoBook X513 the laptop you’ve been looking for? Let’s find out in this review:

Asus VivoBook 15 review: display and design

Asus VivoBook 15 (X513) features a 15.6-inch Full-HD LED-backlit display. The screen comes with the company’s nano-edge technology due to which the laptop can offer a screen-to-body ratio of 85%. The panel is also TÜV Rheinland Eye Care certified, which means it should be good even while working for long hours on the VivoBook 15.

The bezels are quite thin.

While the screen specifications on paper sound great, the panel itself isn’t the best in its class. The company wanted to offer an overall seamless work experience with the new notebook series, and with that Asus had to settle for a fairly inexpensive-looking panel. The panel offers a lot of brightness even for outdoor use, but where it is lacking is in the viewing angles.

Coming to the design of the VivoBook 15, the laptop is one thing and light and manages to weigh around 1.7kg. The VivoBook is made of plastic and has an overall smooth finish on both the exterior and interior. However, with that design, it brings a lot of flexibility to the body.

As for the ports, the VivoBook 15 has 2 USB 2.0 ports on the left. On the right side of the laptop, you will find the power input port, an HDMI 1.4 port, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A port and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type C port. There is also a 3 headphone jack, 5mm and a microSD card adapter on the right.

Asus VivoBook 15 doesn’t feature the best display in its class.

As for the speakers, the sound of the Vivobook 15 is powered by Harman Kardon. For a lightweight laptop, the speakers offer excellent audio output. I enjoyed watching movies on Netflix and even enjoyed playing music while working. However, I did notice that there is some chassis vibration at higher volumes. Also, since the speakers are fired downwards, they work great on a tabletop, but fall short when the laptop is held on an uneven surface like a bed or sofa.

Asus VivoBook 15 review: keyboard and trackpad

Asus generally offers a great experience when it comes to the keyboard and trackpad on its laptops. The Asus Vivobook 15 also comes with a good touch keyboard and I had no trouble writing articles using the keyboard. The keyboard is also backlit with three levels of brightness, making typing easier in darker environments.

The keyboard is tactile enough and the trackpad offers a smooth experience.

As for the trackpad, Asus takes advantage of Windows Precision drivers so that gesture controls in Windows 10 are perfect. The trackpad itself is smooth and is one of the best I’ve used. Additionally, there is a fingerprint sensor on the trackpad, which makes logging in much easier and faster.

Asus VivoBook 15 review: performance

Asus Vivobook 15 comes equipped with an Intel Core i5 11th Gen CPU along with 8GB of RAM. For storage, the laptop comes with a 256GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive. This combination makes day-to-day tasks, such as browsing or working in an Excel sheet, much more fluid.

If you are looking to play games on this laptop, this would not be the best option. It comes with Intel’s integrated GPU and it doesn’t offer much graphics power. So heavy video editing or gaming are the areas to avoid on the Vivobook 15.

As for my usage during the review, the laptop ran smoothly even with a dozen tabs open in Google Chrome. He even had apps like WhatsApp, Slack, Spotify, and Microsoft Excel running in the background. Even with all of this, the laptop didn’t stutter.

Asus VivoBook 15 review: battery

Asus has managed to deliver decent battery performance in the Asus VivoBook 15. The slim and light laptop was able to last over 6 hours. While this is not an impressive number, I appreciated it because it came from a gaming laptop.

Asus VivoBook 15 review: verdict

In closing, the Asus VivoBook 15 (X513) is a good buy for anyone who wants to perform basic tasks like taking video calls, browsing the web, and more. However, if you plan to play games or edit videos on the go, you should look elsewhere.
