MANILA, Philippines – Political detainee Queen Mae Nasino appealed on Monday to the compassion and mercy of the Manila Regional Court of First Instance to allow her to see her dead three-month-old baby for the last time.

Baby River, Nasino’s daughter, passed away last Friday, almost two months after being separated from her mother after giving birth while in jail.

Previously, the baby’s doctor had advised his family to let the mother see her son while he was still alive because his lungs are failing and he is no longer responding to medications. Nasino’s attorneys filed an urgent motion Friday night, but Baby River expired that same night.

On Monday, another very urgent motion was filed with Section 37 of the Manila Regional Court of First Instance in the hope that he would be able to visit his son’s wake in Pandacan, Manila.

“She implores, no, begs and begs this Honorable Court to immediately give her the decent and humane opportunity to be with her little daughter, whom she could not comfort and embrace while on the sickbed until the hours of her death, for the last time. time, and to properly mourn his tragic and untimely death, ”said the very urgent motion presented on his behalf by the National Union of People’s Lawyers.

“She prays for the true compassion and mercy that any inconsolable mother in deep pain needs,” the motion said.

Nasino has been detained since November 2019. She was arrested when she was one month pregnant. She was among those detained in operations coordinated by the Philippine National Police in various offices and homes in Manila and Negros Occidental.

She gave birth last July, but was forced to separate from her son on August 13 by order of Section 20 of the Manila Regional Court of First Instance.

A month later, the baby fell ill and was rushed to the Manila Medical Center. She was transferred to the Philippine General Hospital after exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. Although she tested negative, her health deteriorated and last Friday she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital where she died that same day.
