JESUS CLINT ARANAS does not rely solely on numbers and left his fate to the voters as he challenges current Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino in the organization’s elections on November 27.
“I will leave that to your discretion,” said the president of World Archery Philippines when addressing the 54 voters in the political exercise.
Aranas, a tax attorney and former government official, said he is not trying to “sell hard” his bid to become POC president in this challenging period for sports.
“This is not how we campaign,” he said Tuesday at the Philippine Sports Writers Association Forum presented by San Miguel Corp., Go For Gold, Milo, Amelie Hotel Manila, Braska Restaurant and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. and with Smart technology.
Tolentino, who became POC president in July last year completing the unfinished term of boxing chief Ricky Vargas, welcomed Aranas’s challenge.
“We are all free to run and aspire to that position … if they want to make contributions to Philippine sports,” said Tolentino, who is seeking a full four-year term.
The 54 voting members of the POC include the usual 51 heads of national sports associations, the Athletes Commission representatives Hidilyn Diaz and Jesse Lacuna and the representative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the Philippines, Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski.
Aranas hinted that “two, three or four” NSAs with problems related to their registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission are pending deliberation.
Aranas has its own platform that is based on transparency and unity.
“For those who have known me, I am a very simple person. I have nothing to hide. And we should be united. Otherwise, it will never work, ”he told the forum that it has Upstream Media as its official Internet streaming partner.
Aranas said changes are needed in Philippine sports.
“We are at a critical tipping point. We see the POC as a divided house. What do we really want? What do you need? What do we want to achieve? “He told the weekly forum.” That’s why they put me at the forefront here. Someone has to lead the fight. “
The Aranas ticket includes Steve Hontiveros (president), Dr. Philip Juico (first vice president), Ada Milby (second vice president), Julian Camacho (treasurer), Monico Puentevella (auditor) and Robert Bachmann, Charlie Ho and Robert Mananquil (members of the board).
The Tolentino team is made up of Tom Carrasco (President), Al Panlilio (First Vice President), Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez (Second Vice President), Cynthia Carrion (Treasurer), Chito Loyzaga (Auditor) and Pearl Managuelod, Dave Carter, Rep. Prospero Pichay and Dr. José Raúl Canlas (board members).
