Apple announced that its MagSafe technology is back with the iPhone 12 lineup, but there have been some questions about some of the planned accessories. Let’s take a look at the new leather cases for iPhone 12 and news about the new MagSafe products.
The return of MagSafe seems like an exciting and worthwhile system for iPhone with benefits ranging from 2x wireless charging speeds to a variety of great accessories from Apple and third parties. While Apple has already listed some of its own MagSafe accessories and we’ve seen plans from Belkin and more to launch new products in December, there are some unanswered questions.
Leather cases for iPhone 12
Apple showed off MagSafe leather cases at the iPhone 12 event, but only silicone and clear options are showing up at the moment. In fine print at the bottom of the iPhone press release, Apple shared this:
The leather case for iPhone 12 Pro will be available starting Friday, November 6. The MagSafe Duo charger and leather case will be available at a later date.
And Apple said the same for the iPhone 12. The new leather cases include Apple’s traditional version and, in addition to a new leather case (shown above), prices for these upcoming products have yet to be shared.
MagSafe chargers
Apple revealed two MagSafe chargers with the unique “MagSafe Charger” featured on Apple’s website. It costs $ 39. But unfortunately, it doesn’t come with a power supply like Joanna Stern from WSJ noted today.
Apple’s website confirms that with the product listing noting that the only item in the box is the “MagSafe Charger.”
The silver lining is that when Apple removed the charger from the iPhone 12 box, the old 18W power adapter was replaced with a 20W one, priced at $ 19 (compared to $ 29 before). For those who don’t have enough USB-C power adapters yet, many are likely to skip Apple’s option and go for a more affordable third-party one.
As Apple mentioned in the footnote on leather cases, the MagSafe Duo charger “will be available at a later date” and the pricing has yet to be confirmed.
Another fact about MagSafe chargers, they work with any of Apple’s Qi-compatible devices, but they won’t give the maximum power of 15W unless you have an iPhone 12.
