Mark Nonoy could become the last to leave Santo Tomas Tigers University following reports that he is close to joining Taft’s La Salle Archers.
Sources told Manila Bulletin-Tempo that Nonoy is transferring in the wake of Sorsogon’s training bubble, but there is no official news from both camps on this matter as of press time.
Nonoy, a product of Negros Occidental, made his presence felt in season 82 when he took Rookie of the Year honors and helped the Tigers reach their first final appearance since 2015.
In earlier reports, Adamson showed interest in acquiring Nonoy after photos of him with Adamson’s trainer Franz Pumaren surfaced online.
The same source that did not advance for unknown reasons.
Former team captain CJ Cansino was the first to leave the Tigers’ lair at the height of the training bubble controversy and was transferred to the University of the Philippines. Brent Paraíso, Ira Bataller and Rhenz Abando followed suit, as they are now committed to playing for Letran, while Jun Asunción has moved to Mapua.
His departures have forced technician Aldin Ayo to submit his resignation, assuming full responsibility for said training that allegedly violated government health protocols. Meanwhile, it is reported that JV Gallego from the National University will also be going to an NCAA school, but no official announcements have been made yet.
Gallego’s ardent suitor is San Beda, the source said.
It should be remembered that the NU men’s team has also been affected by the controversy after the exodus of future stars: Carl Tamayo, Kevin Quiambao and Gerry Abadiano.
The three high school stars helped propel the NU Bullpups to back-to-back championships, including a big sweep last season.
Worse still, head coach Goldwin Monteverde also resigned due to his break with one of the team’s sponsors.
Tamayo and Abadiano, 6-foot-7, are now with the University of the Philippines Maroons, while Quiambao opted to play for the Archers next season.
