MANILA, Philippines – Although the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) has already approved a freezing order, the number of bank accounts and other assets of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army remains zero.

“The FO (freeze order) makes general reference to“ CPP / NPA and related accounts (RA) ”only. Covered persons, including banks, will play a very important role in identifying these RAs because they will have the information to determine whether an account or accounts are being used or maintained directly or indirectly by said designated CPP / NPA ”, AMLC executive. Director Mel Racela said on Monday.

He said: “Based on available data, we have not seen any accounts under the name of CPP / NPA for obvious reasons. So we are still at zero right now. “

The CPP-NPA was labeled a terrorist organization by the Anti-Terrorism Council.

Under Secretary of Justice Adrian Sugay said the appointment is only for the purpose of freezing the assets of the terrorist organization.

“This simply means that our work, that is, the AMLC in partnership with the covered people and various law enforcement and intelligence agencies, has just begun,” Racela said.

Meanwhile, Sugay said that the proscription case against the CPP-NPA will continue.

It explained that the ban means making it illegal while its members can be prosecuted for violating the 2020 Anti-Terrorism Law.

The ban, he said, is still necessary because once banned “they will be declared a terrorist organization. For this purpose, they could be legally intervened and their bank accounts could be examined and eventually frozen. “

The banning case is pending before a court in Manila.
