“AMBO” (international name: Vongfong) strengthened and intensified in a tropical storm late Tuesday night, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

Starting at 11 p.m., Pagasa last saw the tropical storm 455 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Surigao or 400 kms east of Guian, Eastern Samar, moving north at 20 kilometers per hour (kph) .

Both accumulated maximum sustained winds of 65 km / h near the center and gusts of up to 80 km / h over the Philippine Sea.

Pagasa said the Ambo canal or extension would bring scattered to moderate light and sometimes heavy rain during thunderstorms over Mindanao and eastern Visayas by Wednesday night.

Meteorologist Meno Mendoza said Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon and Masbate will experience moderate to heavy rains from Wednesday night to Thursday night.

The state meteorological agency said that floods and rain-induced landslides can occur in highly susceptible to highly susceptible areas during heavy or prolonged rain.

Mendoza said Sign No. 1 may soar over eastern Samar and the eastern north of Samar in the next 6 to 12 hours in anticipation of “potentially strong winds” associated with Ambo.

The meteorology specialist said that disruption to maritime activities can be experienced in areas where there is a storm signal.

He said moderate to rough seas will be experienced on the east coast of the Bicol region and the east and north coasts of the eastern Visayas in the next 24 hours.

Both can intensify further as you get closer to the Eastern Visayas and Bicol region.
