MANILA, Philippines: The Philippines recorded 3,962 additional coronavirus disease infections, bringing the total number of cases to 283,460.

At 4 p.m. Saturday, the Department of Health (DOH) said active COVID-19 cases soared to 68,645.

Meanwhile, 1,128 more people were able to recover from the disease, bringing the total number of COVID-19 survivors to 209,885.

Another 100 more people died from the disease. This brings the death toll from COVID-19 across the country to 4,930.

Of the recently reported deaths, 66 occurred in September, 16 in August, seven in July, four in June, and seven in April.

DOH also changed the total number of cases by eliminating 27 duplicates that included 15 recoveries.

Seventeen recoveries were reclassified as deaths after the health department underwent validation.

Of the 128 accredited laboratories in the country, only eight molecular laboratories were unable to submit their COVID-19 data to the health agency.

The DOH said that these laboratories are the Daniel O. Mercado Medical Center, the Dr. Jorge P. Royeca Hospital, the Kaiser Inc. Medical Center, the Covid-19 Lanao del Norte Testing Laboratory, the Las Piñas General Hospital and the Centro Trauma Satellite (Gene-Xpert Laboratory), Las Piñas General Hospital and Trauma Satellite Center (RT-PCR Laboratory), Institute for Tropical Medicine Research and Safeguard DNA Diagnosis.

The outbreak of SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of the respiratory disease, first emerged in the Wuhan capital Hubei, China, in late December 2019.

For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, but causes serious illnesses such as pneumonia in older adults and people with underlying health problems.
