SMART CLARK GIGA CITY: Slowly but surely, Raymond Almazan has shown great signs of recovery from the serious injury he sustained earlier this year.
Almazan posted his best game so far in the bubble, unloading a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of play as Meralco rebounded with a 95-93 victory over Terrafirma at the Chris Newsome doorbell Sunday at the AUF Arena. .
The lanky big man suffered a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee that knocked him out in the Bolts’ final rematch against the Kings of Geneva in the Governor’s Cup, which the latter won with a score of 4-1 in the Serie.
Almazan admitted that he is still 80 percent in terms of his condition.
“Honestly, I’m still looking for my injury in the game. As of this season I really don’t have practice.” I can’t keep up with them, “he said.
The 31-year-old center showed that he has been doing extra work since he entered the bubble to get back on track.
And that has been paying dividends for the former Gilas Pilipinas standout, as he averaged just 7.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in 17.25 minutes of action in his last eight games.
“I’m slowly improving,” Almazan said. “So slowly, step by step. Now my game is good. We have to rest first. “
Coach Norman Black said in a previous interview that Almazan will be a big factor if Meralco wins or at least has a shot at his first Philippine Cup title.
“He’s going to be that guy that if we’re going to win a championship or we have a chance to win a championship, he’ll be right in the middle,” the grand slam-winning mentor said then.
However, the former Letran star wants to focus on the present. “Honestly, I don’t think about it yet because the team didn’t make the All-Filipino playoffs for five years. That’s our goal now, we can get in, we’ll be in the top four, twice to beat, then we’ll work from there. ”
But if the Bolts reach the final, Almazan already has an opposing team in mind.
“Heal Guinevere ulit,” he laughed.
