MANILA, Philippines – Filipino tennis star Alex Eala advanced to the second round of the 2020 Roland Garros youth tournament on Sunday.
Eala avoided an early surprise after pulling off a comeback over Natalia Szabanin of Hungary, 6-4, 6-1.
Eala, 15, bounced back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set before the match was momentarily stopped due to rain.
But the interruption hardly affected Eala’s momentum as he picked up where he left off when play resumed.
Eala faces Mara Guth from Germany in the second round.
Eala, the world’s No. 4 youth player, is the second seeded player in the women’s singles tournament.
She will also compete in women’s doubles with American Elvina Kalieva as a partner.
