Aldin Ayo’s appeal to UAAP will not be an easy process

Appeals at the Philippine College Athletic Association are not simply about passing a signed document requesting reconsideration.

In the case of the indefinite banishment from the league of the former coach of the University of Santo Tomás, Aldin Ayo, it will be much more difficult.

Appeals in the 83-year-old league must formally come from a member school official. In other words, it has to be endorsed by UST or any of the seven universities.

But Ayo resigned from his position as head coach of the Growling Tigers on September 4.

You don’t have to look far for an appeal example to reduce a penalty.

On October 1, 2019, the head coach of the University of the Philippines, Bo Perasol, was sanctioned with a three-game suspension. His expulsion from UP’s game against Ateneo on September 29 resulted in a one-game suspension, while his “continued blatant acts of aggression” resulted in two more games.

It was not Perasol who made an appeal to try to reduce the sentence. Instead, it was the dean of UP College of Human Kinetics and representative of the Board of Managing Directors, Kiko Díaz, who signed the appeal.

The appeal was ultimately dismissed by tournament commissioner Jensen Ilagan.

In addition to needing a member university to sign his appeal form, Ayo’s punishment for allegedly holding a training camp in Capuy, Sorsogon did not come from just a tournament official. It was the recommendation made by the BMD on September 3 and approved by the Board – top officials of the UAAP – on September 7.

And, of course, the UAAP is a private corporation.
