MANILA, Philippines – Sorsogon Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero acquitted Aldin Ayo, a former head coach of the University of Santo Tomás, of any violation regarding the Tigres bubble training in his native province amid of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an official document released by The Varsitarian, Escudero certified that Ayo and the Growling Tigers did not engage in prohibited basketball activities during the Sorsogon bubble, ultimately leading to the departure of some of their players.
Escudero said the actions of Ayo and his team were still in accordance with the rulings of the Interagency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

“The actions carried out by former coach Aldin Ayo are in accordance with the protocols and health guidelines according to the existing IATF-EID and that there was no basketball training of the UST-sanctioned team carried out at Mr. Ayo’s home or there were activities of prohibited basketball performed by his guests outside his residence within the jurisdiction of the Province of Sorsogon, ”Escudero wrote in the certification that was dated September 28.
“Mr. Aldin Ayo is not responsible for the violation of any health protocol in accordance with the EID-IATF guidelines and local executive orders in Sorsogon province.”
According to Escudero, Ayo’s actions were “legitimate activities.”
Escudero also made the decision based on the findings of the Philippine National Police in Sorsogon.
The consequences of the Sorsogon bubble, however, were severe with Ayo’s resignation from his position and Rev. Fr. Jannel Abogado, OP also resigns as director of the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics, the UST office he presides his student-athletes.
Ayo was expelled from the UAAP and from all activities related to the league. He has said he will appeal the ban.
Players like CJ Cansino, Mark Nonoy, Rhenz Abando and Brent Paraiso also transferred schools.
