MANILA, Philippines – The PBA will not sanction Phoenix head coach Louie Alas for violating the league’s health and safety protocols during practice.
Commissioner Willie Marcial sees no need for the PBA to penalize Alas as his team has already suspended him.
Marcial also said that he is pleased to see teams take the initiative and show zero tolerance to ensure a safe environment in practice.
“In fact, I agree with that to see that the teams themselves are the ones that control their ranks,” Marcial told INQUIRER.net in Filipino on Wednesday.
Alas has been suspended for 15 days by Phoenix management for failure to adhere to three health and safety guidelines on the first day of the team’s resumption of training.
Alas, it was said that he violated protocols by being inside the practice site ahead of schedule and while the court was still being disinfected and by having his fingers bandaged by the team’s physiotherapist.
“I am disappointed but also happy at the same time because even though I was suspended for 15 days, I know that our team will strictly follow the guidelines,” Alas told INQUIRER.net.
Alas, 56, who stressed that he is not justifying his actions, said it was “involuntary” on his part, adding that his emotions got the better of him.
“I had no idea that I had committed violations until management told me. Everything was involuntary. I think I was just too excited to see that we can finally practice again. “
Alas will be able to rejoin his team in practice on September 10.
