Etheridge arrives

Birmingham City have solved their goalkeeping shortage by bringing Neil Etheridge to the club.

The Blues have agreed to an undisclosed fee with Cardiff City for the former Bluebirds and Walsall goalkeeper, who has signed a four-year contract.

He signs after spending Thursday at Wast Hills having a medical exam and working out personal terms and Blues hopes to have him available to face Brentford in the season opener.

Etheridge will challenge new recruit Andres Prieto for the number one jersey.

His signing will be a huge boost for a team that lost Lee Camp, David Stockdale and sent Connal Trueman on loan.

How Blues fans reacted

@ TomCraven93: Neil Etheridge is a top signing! I think we all know what the next position target is now

@ReegJackson: Etheridge is a really good signing. Not quite Joe Hart-style, but definitely the same guy as Randolph, etc. Hope you are ready for a busy season, hope you quickly become a fan favorite!

@ jeavons24: Blues finally gives me reason to be positive about a new season. It doesn’t feel good.

@ nathancarty112: Get yourself a nice addition that you can’t wait to see it get started, keep going!

@ JMaddison95: I’m actually crying, somebody take out the camcorder!

And Cardiff’s reaction …

Louise Gouldstone: A much improved goalkeeper since he joined. I enjoyed watching it, good luck in Birmingham.

Stuart Davidson: It’s a shame to see him go, but the Smithies is performing too well and Neil needs playing time, good luck.

Colin Turley: Good for him and the City, he can play games that the club gets the best part of 2 million, and saving around a million in his salary, in 9 months he would be out of contract, we would not get anything, good move all round, good luck to the boy.

Jade Plumley: I wish you all the best and thank you for all you have done for us. Great goalkeeper and I hope he continues to do great things.

The expert’s verdict

We spoke to Wales Online’s Bluebirds reporter Glen Williams to find out this truth.

GW: “He will be remembered as a great goalkeeper by Cardiff City fans.

“He was crucial to the club’s promotion to the Premier League and he voted the club’s Player of the Year while he was in the top flight.

“A wonderful shot stopper and a leader too, who can’t be underestimated over the course of a season.

“Cardiff City will miss him, but the time was right for everyone to move on.”
