Air New Zealand offers ‘mystery getaways’ to lure return travelers

(CNN) – In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, all travel seems like a big question mark. So, an airline argues, why not accept that question mark?

Air New Zealand is reviving its Mystery Breaks program, where travelers pay a flat rate to book a full vacation package with the airline and agree not to find out their destination until two days before departure.

The packages, which start at $ 599 AUD ($ 422 USD), allow travelers to choose from three tiers: Great, Deluxe, or Luxury. They will also select the dates they want to travel and a place they are not interested in going.

The airline flies to 20 destinations in New Zealand, including Art Deco-filled Napier, the adventure capital Queensland and historic Dunedin.

Accommodation will be at an Accor and Avis hotel, as both brands are Air New Zealand partners.

New Zealand has been successful in containing the coronavirus within its borders, but residents are unable to travel anywhere outside the country, save for some Australian states, without quarantining themselves or going through other security measures upon return.

According to the New Zealand Ministry of Health, the country has had 1,531 confirmed cases of coronavirus within its borders and only 25 deaths.

National coronavirus restrictions were lifted in June. Currently, there are no limits for domestic travel.

While the country’s borders remain closed to almost all visitors, the most effective way to stimulate the tourism sector is to encourage locals to travel within the country.

Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA), a national body made up of numerous partners from the tourism industry, has requested the assistance of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, whose government recently won re-election by a decisive majority.

Among the TIA proposals was a suggestion that the government give each New Zealander a $ 200 “credit card” to use for tourism-related businesses such as hotels and attractions.
