MANILA, Philippines – Several celebrities led by Agot Isidro appealed to the Elections Commission (Comelec) on Wednesday to protect millions of votes when it issues a comment on former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s proposal to annul the election results. in three provinces of Mindanao.
Isidro, Pia Magalona and the writer and entertainment manager Noel Ferrer went personally to Comelec’s main office in Intramuros, Manila, to present the appeal letter addressed to the president of the electoral body, Sheriff Abas, and to the commissioners.
The letter was signed by other celebrities such as singer Bituin Escalante, actors Enchong Dee and Iza Calzado, Arman Ferrer, Carlos Aguilos, Kalila Aguilos, Maychelle Baay, Bayang Barrios Villegas, Reymund Domingo, Sweet Plantado-Tiongson, Jet Valle and Adrienne Vergara .
The appeal comes when the Supreme Court, constituted as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), granted Comelec 20 days to present its comment on issues related to Marcos’ attempt to annul the electoral results in Lanao del Sur, Basilan and Maguindanao due to alleged anomalies.
In their letter, the celebrities urged “to underline the application of electoral rules, particularly Comelec Resolution No. 9720 and Rule 65 of the PET Rules.”
“La Comelec, in its Resolution No. 9720, indicated that a Division [might] dismiss the protest, without further formalities, if a reasonable recovery of the protested pilot sites could not be established, ”the letter said.
“With Rule 65 also establishing the same, Marcos’ electoral protest should have been dismissed long ago as it failed to achieve a substantial recovery of the pilot provinces that he himself identified,” the letter adds.
The celebrities then reiterated their call to the electoral body to defend the implementation of these rules “so as not to deprive millions of voters of their rights and to preserve our electoral processes and the faith of the Filipino people that justice has no color.” [ac]
