MANILA – The Health Department said Friday that the Philippines was able to dramatically reduce the number of fireworks injuries during the Christmas season with no fatalities.

“From December 21, 2020 to January 1, 2021, a total of 50 injuries were reported. 49 fireworks-related injuries and 1 stray bullet wound. This is 85% less than the 290 cases reported last year in the same period, ”said Health Secretary Francisco Duque III during a press conference at the East Avenue Medical Center.

“There were no cases of ingestion of fireworks and no deaths were reported,” he added.

During the briefing broadcast live on Teleradyo, Duque said that the number of injuries is even 89% higher than the 5-year average for the same period from 2015 to 2019.

Duque said that the National Capital Region still has the highest number of injuries with 22. These are from Manila (12 cases), Caloocan (4), Pasig (2), QC (2), Malabon (1) and Marikina ( 1). He said it was an 88% decrease in NCR cases compared to last year.

After NCR are Calabarzon with 5 cases, Regions 1, 5, 6 with 4 cases each.

“The significant reduction in the total number of cases can be attributed to the far-reaching effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that affect people’s willingness and ability to celebrate through the use of fireworks,” Duque said.

He also praised local government units and local CEOs that banned the use of fireworks.

“We also observed that there was a change in the behavior of Filipinos towards health. Due to the pandemic, Filipinos became more aware and involved in ensuring the health and safety of their family and community,” said the chief of health.
