Major General Edgard Arévalo, an AFP spokesman, said that the head of the Armed Forces, General Gilbert Gapay, issued the directive to get to the bottom of the incident.

He said Gapay was unaware of the vaccination of the president’s close security personnel with the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine.

“We maintain our previous statement that the AFP Chief of Staff did not participate in or have knowledge of the circumstances that involved the acquisition of these vaccines, their source and the administration of them to the PSG policemen,” Arévalo said in a statement. .

However, he said that the army backs the PSG brigade chief. General Jesús Durante, who said that the vaccination was to protect the president and the rest of the PSG from Covid-19.

“We support the previous statement of [the PSG chief] that the president’s tight security had been inoculated with the Covid-19 vaccine to greatly reduce the possibility of being the source and carrier of this virus and consequently infecting the president, whose good health and well-being are the primary concern of the PSG ”. Arevalo said.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana previously admitted that the vaccine used was contraband.

The Food and Drug Administration, the Customs Office and the National Bureau of Investigation have already started their respective investigations into the entry and use of vaccines manufactured in China.

The president was the first to reveal that some soldiers had been inoculated with the Sinopharm vaccine.
