AFF Suzuki Cup moves to April 2021
The ASEAN Football Federation plans to host the prestigious Suzuki Cup from April 11 to May 8 next year in the usual round-trip format.
AFF made the announcement on Friday, adding that the timeline will depend on whether the situation around the COVID-19 pandemic improves by then.
This year’s Suzuki Cup was supposed to be held in November and December, but the pandemic prompted the AFF to reschedule the biennial competition for 2021.
“We are delighted with the positive support we have had from our Member Associations and that we have been able to find a suitable window next year to host our most anticipated tournament,” said AFF President Khiev Sameth.
“While we are aware that the fight against the global pandemic is not over, we are cautiously optimistic that the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 will be held in its full format, as we hope to deliver the best of ASEAN in the tournament next. year”. Sameth added.
The Philippine Azkals’ Twitter page later expressed hope that the tournament will take place.
“We will keep our fingers crossed for him to move forward as we continue to hope and pray that everyone is safe from COVID-19,” said Azkals’ Twitter account.
The Azkals reached the semi-finals for the fourth time in the last five editions during the last round of the Suzuki Cup in 2018.
But the national team, then coached by former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, lost to eventual champion Vietnam.
