Advincula sees the appointment as the Pope’s message to the faithful in the ‘peripheries’ – Malaya Business Insight

The archbishop of CAPIZ, José Advincula, yesterday expressed his conviction that his appointment as cardinal by Pope Francis was, in a way, a message from the Holy Father to the people of the “peripheries”.

A report from CBCP News said Advincula believes his appointment could be a way to allow people from remote areas to feel the presence of the Church, as Capiz is a lesser-known diocese.

“This could be a way in which the Holy Father wants to convey to people the presence of the Church in the peripheries,” Advincula said, adding that it is in line with his own belief about how the Church should do its mission.

“I always thought that the Church has to be closer to the people, especially those who are on the peripheries,” Advincula said.

The Archdiocese of Capiz has about 810,000 Catholics and 117 priests in 37 parishes.

Last Sunday, Advincula was among 13 new cardinals from around the world appointed by Pope Francis. Their appointments will be formalized in a consistory at the Vatican on November 28.

Aside from Advincula, the only other active Filipino cardinal is Luis Antonio Tagle, who serves as Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples at the Vatican.

Already retired are Cardinals Gaudencio Rosales and Orlando Quevedo after turning 80.
