The presidential top legal adviser, Salvador Panelo, has mocked the newly formed Sambayan Democratic National Coalition, saying the administration’s bets will overwhelmingly win in next year’s national elections.

He claimed that President Rodrigo Duterte, if he ran for vice president, would be unbeatable regardless of who his running mate was.

“You should join now. Believe me, when judgment day comes, there will be a landslide victory for this president if he runs for vice president, “Panelo said on his” Counterpoint “television program broadcast on state PTV 4.

“Whether the president’s teammate is ‘Inday’ Sara (Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio) or Senator Christopher Bong Go, either one will win, that’s for sure.”

Led by retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio, 1SamBayan was formed by civil society leaders and prominent personalities on Thursday to challenge Duterte’s bets in next year’s polls.

Among those named by 1SamBayan as possible candidates were Vice President María Leonor Robredo; The mayor of Manila, Francisco Domagoso; Senators Maria Lourdes Nancy Binay and Mary Grace Poe; and former senator Antonio Trillanes.

“You are doing the right thing, that has been my challenge for you, unite, fight the President in the elections,” said Panelo.

Duterte had maintained that his daughter Sara would not run for president in 2022.

Go, meanwhile, has repeatedly denied any intentions to run for a higher seat, but said he would run for president if Duterte were his vice president.

Panelo also rebuked Robredofor for “politicking.”

He was responding to Robredo’s statement that it is a sin to think about the 2022 elections as the country battles the coronavirus pandemic.

“It is a sin to tell a lie. You are lying when you say that. You know why? If what you say is true, then you committed the greatest sin because you are not only thinking about the elections during the pandemic, you are politicking, ”Panelo said.

“When you start to criticize the president and the administration for certain inefficiencies and inadequacies perceived without foundation, in fact you are campaigning, you are already campaigning, you are thinking about 2022,” he added.

Robredo previously said she was willing to run for the presidency, but added that she preferred to run for a local position.

She served as a representative for Camarines Sur before becoming vice president.
