MANILA, Philippines – An activist was shot dead in his rented home in the city of Iloilo early Thursday morning.
Lt. Col. Joem Malong, spokesperson for the Western Visayas Regional Police, identified the victim as Jory Porquia, 50, regional coordinator for Iloilo de Bayanmuna.
The initial investigation showed that the victim was inside his home along Barangay Santo Niño Norte when two armed men shot him.
Porquia died on the spot.
An investigation is underway to determine the motive for the attack and identify the killers.
The youth group League for Filipino Students (LFS) denounced the murder of Porquia during the outbreak of the coronavirus disease.
“The League of Filipino Students strongly condemns the murder of Jory Porquia! The fascist attacks continue while we are in the midst of a pandemic. In this regime, those who really help the poor and needy are threatened, harassed and, worst of all, murdered, ”the statement published on its official Facebook page reads.
