The Department of Health (DOH) reported on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, more than 2,500 new cases of coronavirus infections for the second day in a row, as the positivity rate exceeded 10 percent.
The 2,886 new cases brought the cumulative case count to 603,308, and active cases in hospitals and isolation facilities to 44,470, the highest in more than four months after the 47,773 recorded on October 24, 2020.
This also caused the seven-day moving average to exceed 3,000, double the figure from early January and the highest so far in 2021.
The DOH case report issued at 4 p.m. Wednesday also showed that 3,129, or 10.3 percent, of the 30,252 people tested tested positive for Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 ( Covid-19).
The 10.3 percent positivity rate, which was based on reports received by DOH at noon on March 9, is more than double the 5.0 percent guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO ) for the reopening of an economy.
Deaths remained low as the DOH reported 17 additional deaths bringing the death toll from Covid-19 to 12,545. The fatality rate dropped further to 2.08 percent.
There were 221 additional recoveries, bringing the total to 546,293.
Almost half, or 45 percent, of the roughly 1,900 intensive care unit (ICU) beds reserved for Covid-19 patients across the country were occupied as of Wednesday. Only a quarter, or 25 percent, of the 2,000 fans were in use.
Meanwhile, 63 percent of isolation beds and 72 percent of ward beds were still available.
Quezon City still had the highest number of new cases in the past 14 days through March 9, with 2,458 infections, according to the DOH’s national Covid-19 tracker.
It was followed by the city of Cebu with 2,182, the city of Pasay with 2,154, Manila with 1,970 and the province of Cavite with 1,374.
Among the regions, the National Capital Region (NCR) continued to register the highest number of cases for the period with 14,176, followed by Central Visayas (5,215), Calabarzón (3,531), Central Luzón (2,204) and Cordillera (1,395). (Marites Villamor-Ilano / SunStar Philippines)
