Calvin Abueva, the suspended Phoenix Super LPG star, is set to regain his professional basketball license from the Games and Amusement Board (GAB).

However, the government agency said on Friday that Abueva still has to meet certain conditions. “The Beast” must undergo a seminar on the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards of a Professional Athlete and submit to a drug test.

“Calvin was sorry for what he did and was sincere enough to accept his wrongdoing,” GAB President Abraham Mitra said in a statement released to the media.

“[He] he apologized for his actions with the promise not to repeat the same mistakes and to set a good example to the audience, especially the young fans, “he added.

The resolution comes in the wake of a meeting Abueva and Fuel Masters acting head coach Topex Robinson had with Mitra.

Abueva has joined his squad within the bubble environment of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in Clark Freeport and the league has allowed him to join his teammates in conditioning sessions and full contact practice games.

However, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial told the Inquirer on Tuesday that the indefinite ban on the volatile forward would remain.

The #LetCalvinPlay hashtag was spread on social media earlier this week, including the league’s official social media pages, in hopes of convincing PBA leaders to finally lift a suspension that has lasted for 15 months.

Former Abueva mentor Alan Trinidad even appealed to the PBA leadership, saying it would be “a slap in the face” not to see Abueva play when the league is actually making its restart in its home province.

The 32-year-old cager, a PBA champion with Alaska and a mainstay of the national team, was fined and banned indefinitely from the game for ratting out TNT import Terrence Jones and making obscene gestures toward a fan.

Abueva will also not be able to watch a game once the league removes the lid from its compressed Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation on October 11.

Marcial insists that the athlete born in Angeles still has to meet several requirements.

“It’s in the best interest of the league and the best interest of Calvin,” the league chief said in an earlier interview.
