Abueva completes GAB requirements, awaits PBA decision

CLARK FREEPORT – Calvin Abueva, the beleaguered Phoenix Super LPG star, has overcome one of the final few hurdles to return to the PBA.

The Games and Amusement Board (GAB) announced Thursday morning that Abueva approved the seminar on the Code of Conduct and Ethics for the Professional Athlete, one of the prerequisites for regaining his professional basketball license.

“The … seminar has been successfully completed by Calvin,” read an excerpt from the report released to the media Thursday.

“Based on the fulfillment of the documentary requirements and the results of the post-seminar evaluation, it is recommended, therefore, the reinstatement of his professional license subject to the conditions and approval of the Board,” he added.

The report was written by GAB’s Kara Mallonga, who supervised the three webinars. The official revealed that a separate meeting was also held with Fuel Masters coach Topex Robinson, coach Paolo Bugia and Abueva’s former coach Alan Trinidad.

The temperamental athlete has been serving an indefinite sanction imposed by the league since June 4, 2019, for a lewd gesture directed at a fan and a clothesline on former TNT importer Terence Jones, among others.

“Just waiting, chill-chill lang muna,” Abueva said in his brief encounters with the Inquirer at the Quest Hotel.

Robinson, whose team achieved an impressive victory on the first day of the tournament compressed here, said that the recovery of Calvin’s license is one of the final steps in the latter’s return to action.

The other is, of course, the suspension lifted by the Commissioner’s Office.

“It’s what I’ve been saying in the past, including to reporters during the Philippine Sports Writers Association forum (last Tuesday): it’s still in the process of completing the requirements. These (steps) are the best for Calvin, the PBA and for everyone, ”PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial told the Inquirer in a quick phone call also Thursday morning.

“That statement has not changed,” he added.

I asked if the fans could see Abueva competing in the bubble if he exceeds the aforementioned requirements, the league boss said: “He could, he could. Perhaps.”
