Floyd Mayweather Jr. permanently retired after his last official boxing match against Conor McGregor. The undefeated fighter is still open to making money by stepping into the ring for exhibition fights. Also, he would love to do it against MMA fighters.
With an impeccable 50-0 record, Mayweather has done almost what he could have done in his professional career. He culminated a career that saw him win fifteen major world titles with a victory over double MMA champion Conor McGregor in 2017. Since then, ‘Money’ has stayed away from the ring, although he trains quite regularly.
Aside from being the fighter that he is, Mayweather also has a penchant for keeping his name relevant. As of now, he has no interest in fighting real boxers. Instead, he leans more toward exhibition fights.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. 100% sure he’s not fighting any boxer
While speaking to CNN, the 43-year-old highlighted his plans for the future.
“From now on, I am doing exhibitions. I am 100% sure that I will no longer fight any boxer. So that’s out of the question. I mean, just my faculties mean a lot to me. Money does not make me money and my health is more important than moneyMayweather said.
“As far as showing off and fighting MMA guys, will I do that in a ring? Absolutely”, He added.
Since his retirement, Mayweather has fought an exhibition fight once. He faced Japanese kickboxing star Tenshin Nasukawa on December 31, 2018. The boxing legend annihilated the 20-year-old who also had to overcome a size deficit. That fight brought his record against the mixed martial artist to 2-0.
The first of the two victories was most famously over Conor McGregor in 2017. Compared to Nasukawa, McGregor had the size and skills to keep up with arguably the greatest fighter of all time for ten rounds.
Mayweather’s decision not to risk his legacy and impeccable record is a perfect business decision. He was in talks with UFC president Dana White late last year. Presumably, they were discussions surrounding Zuffa Boxing and Mayweather’s participation in it.
However, the year 2020 has not been one of starting new companies. Therefore, Dana White has put those plans on hold for now.
