MANILA, Philippines – About 16,000 police officers have been punished under the Philippine National Police (PNP) internal cleansing program since the Duterte administration began, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Secretary of the Interior, Eduardo Año, said that 16,839 police officers were punished since 2016. Of these, 4,784 police officers were dismissed from the police service, 8,349 were suspended and 1,803 were reprimanded.
Of the dismissed police officers, 564 have been removed from the police service due to their involvement in drug trafficking.
The DILG issued the statement amid public outrage against Police Sergeant Major Jonel Nuezca, who shot and killed Sonya Gregorio and her son in front of their home in Paniqui, Tarlac.
Ano said figures on punished law enforcement officers show that Nuezca will be responsible for the gruesome murder of Tarlac’s victims.
“Then this Nuezca will surely rot in jail like the previous ones taken out and accused by the PNP,” Año said.
(Nuezca will definitely rot in jail as will others who faced charges and were removed from the PNP.)
Nuezca faces a case of two counts of murder in the Regional Court of First Instance of Room 67 of Paniqui, Tarlac.
The PNP Internal Affairs Service is also conducting an investigation into the Nuezca administrative case in connection with the Tarlac killings.
Nuezca was also demoted from Police Sergeant Major to Police Sergeant Major for a serious misconduct in 2014.
