(CNN) – Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira has broken her own world record for the largest wave ever surfed by a woman.
The 33-year-old rode a 73.5-foot wave off Praia do Norte, Portugal, on February 11, beating her previous record by 5.5 feet. She made history in 2018 after riding a 68-foot-high wave in the same waters.
“I never thought this could happen, it still feels surreal,” Gabeira said in an Instagram post capturing her achievement. “Having a woman in this position in a male dominated sport is a dream come true!”
Since measuring wave size is difficult, teams from the University of Southern California, WaveCo Science Team and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography reviewed videos of the surfer’s feat to confirm that she once again broke the record, according to Guinness World Records. .
The teams used scientific calculations based on real-world coordinates, as well as Gabeira’s height and the length of his table to determine the measurements, the organization said.
Gabeira, who started surfing when she was 17, was knocked unconscious in 2013 while in the water and was rescued by a fellow surfer, but that didn’t stop her from getting back on her board.
“I still love the sport so much, even after so many difficult times, serious injuries and trauma,” he said in a statement on Guinness World Records.
Gabeira was also declared by the World Surf League as the winner of the cbdMD XXL Biggest Wave Award.
