Senate configured to hold sessions via videoconference, remote media

MANILA – The Senate is expected to adopt a resolution allowing them to hold sessions by teleconference, once Congress meets on Monday.

In a statement Saturday, the Senate said it will resume the sessions and hold them via video conference due to the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III said that most senators are expected to physically attend the session, in which they will pass Senate Resolution No. 372, which seeks to amend the Senate rules to “allow the conduct of plenary sessions and committee hearings via teleconference, video conference or other reliable forms of remote or electronic means. “

The senators who have signed the resolution are:

Senator Panfilo Lacson is expected to sign the resolution on Monday.

Sotto had said that the prolonged blockade in Metro Manila and other areas with high COVID-19 cases will not affect the resumption of the ordinary session of Congress.

The legislature established its 9 a.m. work schedule. at 4 p.m.

“However, employees assigned to the plenary session or performing session-related functions may be required to provide services beyond said work hours,” said Senate Secretary Myra Marie Villarica.

The Senate is also expected to adopt a resolution expressing its condolences to the family of former Senator Heherson Alvarez, who died of COVID-19 on April 20.
