Ricky Gervais has revealed that the Netflix series After Life has been his most difficult project to date, counting RadioTimes.com Writing the bittersweet comedy drama was more challenging than working on past hits like The Office and Extras.
In an exclusive interview, the writer / star explained that After Life, in which he plays the widower Tony, can “go anywhere” and that its wider reach makes scripts more difficult to write.
“The” situation “is huge,” said Gervais. “With The Office, it was a group of people in one place … I had worked in an office for 10 years, I know [that]… and almost the funny thing about The Office was that nothing happens, so that was pretty easy.
“And Brent was also such a strong central character, he was a man who desperately wanted to be famous and discovered, so once you know it, it’s clear.
“Extras was difficult, because the ambition was greater. But again, it’s easy to explore the narcism and ego of the actors and actresses. Derek was, again, pretty easy, like The Office, really, a fake documentary about a load of characters in one place. Then I would say After Life [is the hardest]. “
After Life recently launched its second season on Netflix, with Gervais explaining that both last year’s debut season and this year’s follow-up had their own particular challenges.
“The first season was difficult because you don’t know the expectations, but it is easier because nobody knows what to expect, so they are not judging you yet,” he said. “And the second season is easier because of all the setup, and it was wonderful that people wanted it, but it was worrying about how well the first season fell … so you can’t win! But it’s a good pressure.” .
The second season of After Life airs now on Netflix. To view the full RadioTimes.com interview with Ricky Gervais, head to facebook.com/radiotimes at 7pm on Friday (May 1) for a live premiere.
