Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero says the players are “scared” by the return of football.
The current campaign remains on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Premier League clubs will meet today to discuss the ‘project restart’.
The League is expecting a return to action in early June, but what that plan would ask of players remains to be seen.
In the midst of talking about a return, the Man City talisman, Agüero, said he and his colleagues are “scared” of returning to work, desperate to protect their families.
“Most of the players are afraid because they have children and families,” the 31-year-old told El Chiringuito.
“I am scared, but I am with my girlfriend here and I will not be in contact with other people.”
“I am locked in my house and the only person who could infect is my girlfriend.
“They say there are people who have it and don’t have any symptoms but they still infect it. That’s why I’m here at home. Maybe I have the disease and I don’t even know it.”
Agüero believes that when the players return to work, they will be “quite nervous” but also “more careful”.
“When a person is sick we will think ‘what is going on here?'” He added. “I hope to find a vaccine soon so that everything ends.”
Meanwhile, Brighton forward Glenn Murray has criticized plans to restart, particularly those that include players with facial masks.
“The facial masks will be unpleasant; it will not be natural,” he said in a video news conference.
“People will cheat them in games. It’s quite ridiculous.”
“I understand why people are desperate to play soccer. It has to be done sensibly and at the right time and in a way that keeps everyone safe.”
“There will be ambulances at practice and games. Is it fair to take them from the NHS? I don’t know.
“It’s not just about two squads, there’s a lot more involved and it puts more people at risk.”
The veteran leader continued: “I understand that the public is desperate to get soccer back.”
“But we are the ones who are going to go out and compete against other teams.”
“We are not talking about men in a community. We are talking about men from all over the world who could possibly be carrying the disease. There are many warnings.”
“We are all in different situations. I have children at home. I would not want to put them in danger. Some soccer players have newborn children who may be more susceptible to contracting the disease.”
“Some live with elderly parents. It is a really difficult situation to agree to.”
