The third year of Destiny 2 saw some changes in the way Bungie approached the seasonal content of the live game. Throughout this year, the seasons have seen new rhythms of history and activities appear for a few months, and then disappear with the start of a new season. Bungie is changing parts of that focus in the fourth year of the game, allowing him to play seasonal activities for longer.
Bungie detailed the change in her latest blog post This Week at Bungie. Starting with Season 12, which will mark the start of Destiny 2 Year 4, Bungie will make seasonal activities, story missions, and rewards persist throughout the year.
That contrasts with the approach Bungie attempted in Year 3 with his current batch of seasons. In another blog post, director Luke Smith explained that Bungie hoped to make Destiny feel like an evolving experience with his current focus. The stories unfold throughout the seasons, leading to specific activities. Those stories end at the end of the season and set the story for the next, and the specific activities that accompany each season, and its various loot rewards, also disappear.
Smith said Bungie was going for a “you had to be there” feeling with its seasonal content, encouraging players to tune in and create memories during special events and stories that exist for a limited time. But that has led many players to complain about “fear of getting lost,” where taking time off from the game means that you may not earn all the rewards of a season or see all it has to offer.
Bungie’s new approach fights that: Activities and at least some rewards will continue to exist after a season ends, though the way they work will change to accommodate the advanced narrative of the game world. The post says Bungie is beginning some of that focus in its next content season, which begins in June, when it will add new engrams to the game that will allow players to earn seasonal rewards from the rest of Year 3.
Upcoming seasonal changes will also see fewer rewards. Right now, rewards, small goals like piling up a series of murders with a certain weapon or against a specific type of enemy, make up a large part of every seasonal activity. It has also been a complaint from gamers, as rewards generally only encourage you to play activities with slightly adjusted approaches, such as favoring grenades or choosing a specific type of Super Skill. Bungie says she will steer clear of an overdependence on rewards for the next few seasons, while adjusting rewards rewards so they don’t feel like chores to log in and complete each week to keep her character moving forward for a season.
All of the changes seem to address the player concerns that have come up in Year 3, though it will be a while before those changes arrive in the game. Season 11 of Destiny 2 begins on June 9, and it will be an additional 10 weeks before the start of season 12 and Bungie’s tweaks on how the game works.
