If there was one thing that would surely happen to one of the two open roster spots the Los Angeles Lakers had, it was that they were going to sign a center. Now that they’ve done that, adding Andre Drummond, there’s less certainty about what they’re going to do with their final opening.
On Sunday, Jovan Buha and Jared Weiss of The Athletic reported that the Lakers were hoping to sign a 3-D player with their last spot on the roster, but Frank Vogel rejected the idea that the team had a particular type of player. mind during his pregame media availability on Wednesday.
“I’m not sure where exactly that will fall, but we continue to monitor what types might be available,” Vogel said. “I’m not really going to go into the specific team needs or the positional needs that we are targeting, it really is more about which players are available who have the most intrigue and who we think can help us the most, rather than targeting a set of specific skills or something like that. “
The truth is likely to lie somewhere between what was reported and what Vogel said. For example: If the Orlando Magic buy Otto Porter before the playoff eligibility deadline on April 9, then he would likely be the Lakers’ number one target due to their need for size and shooting down the wings. However, if the best player out there is a player in a position he’s already deeply in, they’ll likely explore that avenue too, as evidenced by their search for LaMarcus Aldridge after the trade deadline.
In simple terms, the Lakers have a goal with their final spot on the roster that supersedes any other goal, and that is simply to improve. That may be setting the bar too high given the history of acquisitions after the trade deadline, but that doesn’t mean they’re not going to try to find another Markieff Morris, and by “another Markieff Morris,” I don’t mean The Lost Triplet of Markieff and Marcus, Marco Morris. Someone else besides that.
