The condemned former Calauán, the mayor of Laguna Antonio Sánchez, died, the Corrections Office (BuCor) said on Saturday.

In a statement, the BuCor said that Sánchez was transferred to the Bilibid National Penitentiary Hospital at 8:30 am, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

His body is now subject to an autopsy.

Interviewed on Dobol B TV, BuCor spokesman Gabriel Chaclag said that Sánchez’s cellmates had not noticed anything suspicious about his condition before they were taken to the hospital.

“They saw last night that he slept well. But this morning they noticed that he had not woken up yet and he did chineck (they checked),” said Chaclag.

“Sánchez did not complain last night of shortness of breath or fever,” Chaclag said, adding that the former mayor of Calau did not show flu-like symptoms recently.

In September of last year, Sánchez was admitted to the national prison hospital after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Sánchez later requested the transfer to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), where the then Under Secretary of Justice, Markk Perete, said that Sánchez, who is in his 70s, was diagnosed with an “electrolyte imbalance secondary to acute gastroenteritis, kidney disease chronic, hypertension and benign prostate “. hypertrophy.”

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) later said that Sánchez tested negative for COVID-19.

Sánchez was convicted of the 1993 rape and murder of university student Eileen Sarmenta and the murder of her friend Allan Gómez.

In 2019 it was reported that he had to be released early from prison due to deductions from his sentence based on good behavior. Receiving public and official criticism, his case prompted authorities to revise the rules for awarding prison time allowances.

Sánchez had insisted on his innocence in the rape and murder of Sarmenta, a student at UP Los Baños, and the murder of Gómez, claiming that he was also a victim, having been unjustly convicted. —KG, GMA News
