SMART COMMUNICATIONS, Inc., the wireless arm of PLDT, Inc. said it will deploy more than 90 fuel cell sites across the country by the second quarter of this year, in partnership with a Danish company.
In a press release, Smart said it will reveal green cell sites in off-grid and “network-challenged” areas in urban and rural areas across the country through the end of 2021. The firm added that it has turned to SerEnergy , based in Denmark for the installation of the green cell sites.
On its website, SerEnergy describes itself as the “world’s leading provider of methanol-based fuel cell solutions.”
Fuel cells use electrochemical reactions to produce energy. Smart said stationary fuel cells “emit less carbon dioxide than other technologies” and are “completely carbon neutral if the cells use fuel from renewable energy sources.”
Fuel cells are also said to be more cost effective, compared to existing technologies, as the units have a longer service life.
