While Filipinos have adapted to some degree to the new normal, the continuing effects of the pandemic can still take their toll. Children are just as vulnerable to stress as adults. Here’s what parents can do to help their children cope and stay safe as the world enters the second year of the pandemic.
1. Be honest with your children
Whenever children ask questions about the ongoing pandemic, parents should answer truthfully in a child-friendly manner. Letting children learn about the virus can also protect them against it. This would help them understand the importance of social distancing and stay indoors for now.
2. Assure them that their feelings are valid.
When children express sadness about missing their friends and usual activities, parents should acknowledge their feelings and let them know that it is okay to feel sad sometimes. However, conversations should always end on a positive and reassuring note.
3. Keep outside lines of communication open
Scheduling regular video calls with family members or setting up virtual dates to play games can give kids much-needed social time. Parents can also find ways for children to socialize online safely, such as signing up for arts activities or playing social games. People and family activities can help ease children’s anxiety.
4. Don’t skip bonding time with the kids
The pandemic may have changed many family routines, but having regularly scheduled activities can give children a sense of normalcy. Creating time to play, study, rest, and as a family can give everyone a new routine to follow. Routines are important to everyone, especially children, because it gives them a sense of security in knowing what is coming next in their days.
Most importantly, parents are the ideal role models for children to learn proper and safe hygiene. The best way to prevent children from getting sick is to teach them to wash their hands regularly. Explain to them that it is a way to protect themselves and others. According to the Health Department, social distancing and wearing masks are also among the best tools to prevent the spread of the virus. Learn more about it in the video below.
With the right habits and information, parents can give the entire family the protection they need to stay safe from the pandemic.
