This was based on the results of genome sequencing of 150 samples that came mainly from laboratories in the epicenter of the Metro Manila pandemic, the statement read.
This brings the total number of P.3 variant cases in the country to 104, UK variant cases to 223, and South African variant infections to 152.
The health department reiterated that “variant P.3 is not yet identified as a variant of concern, as currently available data are insufficient to conclude whether the variant will have significant implications for public health,” the statement read from the DOH.
The country posted its highest daily count of more than 7,103 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, despite being under lockdown for more than a year.
The rise in new cases was attributed to health protocol violations and looser quarantine restrictions, with the presence of local variants supposedly just one factor.
