Toyota has a new model on the way, and it’s a category breaker. Meet the Aygo X Prologue, a concept car showing a preview of the third-generation Aygo, giving us a glimpse of what’s to come for one of Toyota’s smaller models.
But wait, isn’t the Aygo a hatchback? Why does this look like a little crossover? Well, the previous two generations were, and this next model retains a hatchback design. However, it also has crossover-inspired styling cues all over it. Toyota didn’t even confirm if it’s a crossover or a hatchback. In the press release, it is simply referred to as the “segment A” model. To add to the confusion, the “X” does not necessarily mean “crossing”, since the current Aygo also uses it to denote trim level.
One thing is for sure, the design of the new Aygo will look wild. At the front, it has sharp C-shaped headlights connected by an LED piece. The large central opening gives the Aygo X Prologue a mean look. Meanwhile, a skid plate and black trim around the bottom edge and fenders give the X Prologue its signature crossover look. The oversized wheels, flap door handles, and small side mirrors are unlikely to make it to the production model, but they do enhance the crossover look of the hatchback.
While the front end looks like a crossover, the rear looks more like a hatchback. It features a large glass rear hatch flanked by a vertical LED taillight similarly connected to the headlights. There is also a rear bumper mounted skid plate that incorporates a bike rack.
The cabin remains a mystery at this point, along with the powertrain specifications. As such, we don’t know if the Aygo X Prologue will be an EV or will be powered by a traditional internal combustion engine. Being an A-segment model, it will sit below the Yaris or Yaris Cross, assuming it is a crossover.
With the “Prologue” model revealed, the Aygo X production model is expected to make its debut before the end of the year. At least then, we can find out if the next-gen Aygo will be a crossover or will remain a city car.
