Minors have again been banned from going outside for two weeks starting today, Wednesday March 17, 2021, in an attempt to halt the rise in Covid-19 cases in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The Manila Metropolitan Development Authority (MMDA) announced Tuesday that only people between the ages of 18 and 65 can leave their residences.
The president of the MMDA, Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr., said that the Metro Manila City Council, through the MMDA, is drafting a resolution that prohibits minors, particularly those between the ages of 15 and 17, from going out to the outdoors for a period of two weeks. This will be implemented in the 17 local government units that make up the NCR.
The measure, Ábalos said, has been agreed by the mayors of Metro Manila to contain the transmission of the virus in the metropolis.
“We are implementing age restrictions due to the increase in our Covid-19 cases. We encourage everyone to strictly observe and practice minimum health protocols and to be extremely careful and follow strict measures, especially when around vulnerable family members, as there have been reports of transmission between family members, ”Ábalos said.
He stressed that the mayors of Metro and MMDA are regularly monitoring the Covid-19 numbers and will implement calibration and policy changes based on the figures they can collect.
Last month, Ábalos said NCR mayors agreed to ease age restrictions as the government sought to encourage economic activities.
The Secretary of Health, Francisco T. Duque III, previously said that between 3 and 5 percent of those who contracted the virus are minors or children.
They can also transmit the virus to older adults when they hug or kiss them.
