No one should ever be surprised to lose a Grammy for a Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande collaboration.
But BTS’s Army, fans of South Korean megastars, had high hopes that the group would win their first Grammy, which would have been the first Grammy for a K-pop act.
The seven-member group hoped to score a victory for the pop duo / group’s performance with the number one single “Dynamite.” The upbeat song, which topped the Hot 100, epitomized last year’s disco revival. It also marked BTS’s first single performed entirely in English.
Gaga and Grande’s “Rain on Me,” another record hit with formidable star power, took home the top prize.
The victory would have marked a major milestone for K-pop at the music industry’s defining awards show (though many fans wondered why they weren’t nominated for top awards at this year’s Grammys).
“Dynamite” was the rejuvenating closer to the 2020 LP “Be”, dealing with the effects of the coronavirus and the isolation that many fans felt while trapped at home.
The group was previously, albeit indirectly, in the mix for Grammy nominations in 2018, when their LP “Love Yourself: Tear” earned a nomination per recording package, although technically the nomination went to design firm HuskyFox.
BTS performed at the Grammys in 2020 as part of Lil Nas X’s medley for “Old Town Road,” where the group’s edit, “Seoul Town Road,” was a highlight of the broadcast. They will also perform on Sunday’s main broadcast.
