State seismologists on Tuesday raised the alert level at Taal volcano to alert level 2 amid “growing unrest.”

In its latest bulletin, PHIVOLCS said that 28 volcanic earthquake episodes, four low-frequency volcanic earthquakes and one hybrid earthquake were recorded at depths of less than 1.5 kilometers below Taal volcano island in Taal in the last 24 hours.

Apart from these, volcanic tremors have increased seismic energy compared to previously recorded episodes and ranged from three to 17 minutes.

“The total number of volcanic tremors has risen to 866 since the start of increased activity on February 13. In addition to these, a total of 141 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes (LFVQ) have occurred in one (1) kilometer of depth below TVI and immediate surroundings, “said PHIVOLCS.

“Overall, last month’s seismic activity indicates increased shallow magmatic and hydrothermal activity below TVI,” he added.

Raising the alert level to 2, PHIVOLCS said there is likely magmatic activity “which may or may not lead to an eruption.”

“At alert level 2, evacuation is not yet recommended. However, the public is reminded that the island of the Taal volcano is a permanent danger zone (PDZ) and that the entrance to TVI, especially the vicinity of the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure must remain strictly prohibited, “he said.
