MANILA, Philippines – Fr. Joaquin Bernas, SJ, a Jesuit lawyer and one of the drafters of the 1987 constitution, passed away early Saturday morning, the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Law School said.
He was 88 years old.
The death of the constitutionalist veteran was confirmed in a memorandum released by the dean of the Ateneo Law School, José María Hofileña.
A copy of the memo was posted on the dean’s Facebook page.
“We are comforted to know that his was an earthly life full of meaning and purpose. An earthly life dedicated to service, to the standards of excellence, in the greater glory of God, ”the memo said.
“Indeed a man, an excellent man, for others,” adds the memo.
“He has contributed enormously to keeping the Ateneo Law School faithful to its identity and vocation. The debt of gratitude owed by the Ateneo Law School to Fr. Bernas can never really be repaid “.
Bernas served as dean emeritus of the Ateneo Law School and was president of the ADMU from 1984 to 1993.
