Former league MVP Kelly Williams is back with TNT Tropang Giga after signing a two-year contract with the franchise, the team announced Thursday.
Williams had previously announced his retirement on September 7, which came as a shock to the team’s management. He has career averages of 10.4 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
“We would like to welcome Kelly back to TNT Tropang GIGA. Her leadership and experience will help us achieve success at the next conference,” said team manager Gabby Cui in a statement.
PBA President and Team Governor Ricky Vargas also welcomed Williams’ decision to return for two more years with TNT.
“Welcome home Kelly, great to have you back. Cheers,” Vargas mentioned.
Williams won the Rookie of the Year award in 2007 and was the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2008, the same year he led the St. Lucia Realtors to their last PBA title.
After dealing with health issues, Williams was traded to Tropang Texters, where he won five more titles.
He is also a five-time All-Star, a Mythical First Team pick three times and a Mythical Second Team pick four times.
Returning head coach Chot Reyes posted on Instagram Thursday morning showing the team’s practice at Moro Lorenzo Gymnasium in Quezon City. Titled “Handles,” it briefly showed Williams engaging in a dribbling drill.
Reyes said he asked about Williams’ status when asked to return as head coach.
“When they asked me to come back, the first question I asked was ‘What about Mark (Dickel)?’ The second question I asked was “What is Kelly’s status?” When management told me they were open, I immediately texted him. We got together, had a serious and honest conversation, and I’m very happy that he’s back. “.
