A mix of entertainment and news shows will be seen on Gtv: GMA-7’s The Lost Recipe starring Mikee Quintos and Kelvin Miranda, Good News hosted by Vicky Morales and Heartful Cafe starring Julie Anne San Jose and David Licauco. That is why GMA Network executives decided to change the name of their sister channel, GMA News TV, to Gtv, which now broadcasts a combination of news and entertainment programs on Channel 27. GMA News TV officially signed on Monday, February 22. February 2021.
Annette Gozon-Valdes, president of GMA Films, Inc. and programming consultant to the president and CEO of GMA, spoke about how the GMA Network made the decision to change the name of the GMA news television channel after 10 years.
She said at a press conference held on February 19, “We have kasi noticed that the audience now, especially during this time, is looking for more variety. So while we keep GMA News TV’s beloved and trusted shows, we started adding many other shows – entertainment shows, we’ll be adding NCAA soon. This channel will be the favorite of those looking for more variety. That’s why we decided to have Gtv ”.
Even before the GMA News TV rebrand, the GMA 7 entertainment and public affairs groups had already started launching new shows. In January, Channel 27 launched its first primetime series, The Lost Recipe, starring Mikee Quintos and Kelvin Miranda. He also aired the romance anthology, “My Fantastic Pag-ibig,” the game show “Game of the Gens,” and the cooking show Farm to Table.
Gozón-Valdés said of these shows: “We feel that the audience is looking for variety and we want to be able to fill that gap of limited airtime for GMA. “Maybe they’re looking for this kind of content too, so we just wanted to provide variety, especially with Gtv targeting the young and the young at heart.”
According to Gozon-Valdés, the idea to change the name of GMA News TV came about in 2020, especially when the Kapuso network closed a deal to broadcast the annual Philippine National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). NCCA is an annual sports tournament with universities in the Philippines that is generally televised, especially during the championship season.
The Kapuso executive explained: “It started a year ago, there was a process to determine the types of programs to launch and the launch schedule. “So finally, as we started rolling out these new shows, and the NCAA is coming soon, and we’ve already lined up the shows we’re launching, it was time to re-brand the channel.
Gozón-Valdés pointed out that with these new programs, the name GMA News TV was no longer suitable for the channel. She continued, “Kasi hindi na siya ganun kabagay talaga with the new channel, especially given the fact that we have been launching many new shows on this channel.
“We launch some entertainment programs on weekdays and weekends, so Hindi na siya talaga tugma to call the GMA News TV channel. Kaya naging Good TV kasi will further encompass the variety of programs that we will air on the new channel.”
Gozón-Valdés also explained that Gtv gives them the opportunity to experiment on programming and the types of programs to produce. “Probably iyon na rin iyong pupuntahan ng Gtv because, as we said, we wanted to target the young and the young at heart. The younger generation always wanted something new, so maybe given our research on what younger audiences would want, we will be able to experiment with these kinds of shows with Gtv. “
Some of the programs expected to air soon on Gtv are: Heartful Café with Julie Anne San José and David Licauco; Love You Stranger will be the highest rated by the real life couple Gabbi García and Khalil Ramos; and Flex, a variety show for the Generation Z market with Mavy Legaspi, Lexi Gonzales, Joaquin Domagoso and Althea Ablan.
