CHESS Grandmaster Wesley So of the United States defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen to win the Opera Euro Rapid chess championship on Monday.
So, 27, of Bacoor, Cavite, defeated Norwegian Carlsen, 2.5-1.5, with a win and three draws on the final day of their two-set, four-game final to win the $ 30,000 jackpot (P1 .5 million).
The victory marked the second time that Mr. So beat Mr. Carlsen on the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, and the first was on November 30 at the Skilling Open on the Norwegian’s birthday.
Mr. So took every opportunity he had during the match to build his momentum on the road to victory.
“I’m so happy. I apologize to Magnus for ruining Valentine’s Day. It’s great. It’s totally unexpected to beat Magnus in any match. It’s a great honor…” Mr. So said after his victory.
In defeat, Mr. Carlsen was courteous, and was later quoted as saying, “Losing is okay, for Wesley. Clearly, he had the most compelling tournament to date. “
Although he was born in the Philippines, Mr. So has been representing the US since 2014. – Michael Angelo S. Murillo
