MANILA, Philippines – Police seized P50 million in “taklobo” or shells from endangered giant clams in Negros Oriental, but the alleged owner of the clams is still at large, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Saturday.

In a statement, PNP identified the owner as Yan Hu Liang, aka Sunny, who owned the species with an established international market value of P918 million.

Meanwhile, the PNP said authorities were able to capture Liang’s reported accomplice identified as Ricardio Santiana Dela Cruz Jr.

Dela Cruz’s arrest came after the RFU 7 Negros Oriental PFU Crime Detection and Investigation Group Operational Units (leader), Bureau Fish and Aquatic Resources, Bayawan City Police Station, the provincial office of Negros Oriental Police (NOPPO) and the 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company will launch a trap operation along Barangay Pagatban, Bayawan city on Thursday.

An undercover law enforcement officer bought 1,000 kilograms of taklobo worth P5 million from Dela Cruz during the operation.

Apart from the giant clams, the Colt .45 caliber pistols were seized; Magazine and live ammunition.

Dela Cruz, who is detained at the Bayawan Police Station, will face complaints for violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and the Philippine Fisheries Code, while Liang will also face charges for violation of the Fisheries Code. From philippines.
