It took ten years, but Korea is finally getting its first outer space sci-fi blockbuster with Netflix’s newest offering, Space Sweepers.
At a press conference on Tuesday, director Jo Sung-hee shares that he first heard stories of space sweepers from friends more than a decade ago, and has been trying to develop the idea for a movie ever since.
Even the main character of the film, Hallyu star Song Joong Ki (Descendants of the Sun), first heard the visionary idea for the film from the director himself when they were both working on the film “A Werewolf Boy” in 2012. He says He has been looking forward to making the movie with Jo ever since, and expressed an interest in participating even before reading the entire script.
“Back then, the story was a little different, but when I heard the new story from director Jo, I was surprised, because it was so new and fresh,” shares Song.
Song is joined by fellow hallyu star Kim Tae-ri (Mr. Sunshine), along with Jin Seon-kyu and Yoo Hae-jin. English actor Richard Armitage (The Hobbit) also joins the cast.
Space Sweepers is set in the year 2092, when the earth is barely habitable and humans have started living in space. It tells the story of a crew of misfits aboard the Victory spacecraft who live off the recovery of space debris. In one particular rubble chase, the crew encounters a 7-year-old human-looking robot and attempts to trade it for a hefty ransom.
When asked what are some of the challenges they encountered while shooting the movie, Song shares a particular scene in the movie when the entire crew is out of the spaceship making repairs.
“That was quite difficult because it had to do with the loss of gravity, that was something new and challenging. But again, incredible preparation came into the picture and it was really satisfying, ”explains Song.
Kim, on the other hand, shares her enthusiasm for what the movie has accomplished for South Korea: “This movie is very Korean and I’m excited to see what other sci-fi movies will come out of Korea. I am proud to be part of the team that did this. “
While she mentioned that she was “sad” that the movie would not be shown on the big screen, Kim remains “happy and grateful” that people around the world can see the movie through Netflix.
Space Sweepers will be available on Netflix starting February 5.
