MANILA, Philippines – Mayor Toby Tiangco has called on national government agencies to investigate the ammonia leak from an ice plant in Navotas City, which killed at least two people.

“They [people] They can look, they can go through the ice plant. I was the one who said the order not to open it [ang ice plant] as long as it’s not safe and make sure the shutdown order is visible, ”he said in an interview on ABS-CBN News Channel on Thursday.

(I myself have ordered to keep the ice plant closed as long as it is not safe and make sure the order to close is visible.)

Tiangco’s statement was in reaction to conflict of interest concerns regarding an investigation by the local government as the ice plant is owned by relatives of his mother.

“If there are national government agencies, I welcome them and encourage them to investigate so that the investigation is objective,” he added.

Tiangco also noted that he “is not involved in any way in the operations of the ice plant.”

The mayor previously assured that the management of the ice plant will take care of the hospitalizations and burial expenses of the victims.

At the time, Tiangco said more than 60 people were hospitalized as firefighters tried to contain the ammonia leak. Authorities contained the chemical leak just two hours before midnight.
